For the third time this season, pitcher Alexa Romero threw a no-hitter to help Syracuse (14-7, 3-1 Atlantic Coast) defeat Virginia (8-18, 0-4) 12-0 in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Friday night.

Over five innings, Romero retired nine of the 17 batters she faced via strikeout and walked two. She is the first pitcher for Syracuse to throw three no-hitters in one season and is 10-4 this season.

On the offensive side of the ball, eight different runners crossed home to make up the 12 runs. The score was 3-0 going into the fifth inning. Center fielder Alicia Hansen was first to bat for the Orange. She was walked, the first of four straight SU batters to receive a free pass. Before the fourth batter (second baseman Gabby Teran) was up to bat, the Cavaliers pulled their pitcher for Tabby Dabney.

Third-baseman Neli Casares-Maher was the fifth batter to step up to the plate in the inning. She singled, recording the first hit in the inning. Syracuse made it through the batting order, ending with nine runs off three hits.

Teran led the team in hits and runs with two and three, respectively. Right fielder Toni Martin joined Teran, Casares-Maher and designated hitter Andrea Bombace as the only members of the team to put a tally in the hit column. Martin also scored two runs, as did left fielder Bryce Holmgren. Five other players rounded out the scoring to bring the final score to 12-0.

Syracuse will face Virginia for the second of a three-game series on Saturday.
