I started my time at The Daily Orange as a sophomore transfer student, eager and ready to prove myself. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but these past two semesters have been rewarding beyond words. In fact, one of the first things Kyle, Anish and Stef said to me in my first interview, was that they learn more from working at The D.O. than they do from class. And that’s remained with me since.

Now, reflecting upon the hours (and hours and hours) of time I’ve dedicated to the Opinion section, I can honestly confirm that there is no other place on campus as worthwhile or fulfilling as 230 Euclid. The relationships and memories I’ve made with each of you will forever remind me of how unique and valuable it is to be a part of this publication.

James: The trajectory of your D.O. experience will always make me laugh. You went from a writer, to a very creative (yet clumsy sometimes, let’s be real) assistant editor to my successor and one of my good friends. I knew from when you first came in as a writer, we were going to get along. I don’t know if it was because of how eccentric you are, but it’s definitely not the mustache. Either way, I’m really going to miss you asking me to play Drake, and I hope you know I appreciate our Five Guys runs even though the “smell sticks to you and your clothes.” You already know you’re more than ready for this job, I’m so excited to see what you do with the Opinion section this spring. Put some Blood Orange on the playlist for me.

Paulina: You stepped up when you knew I needed help this semester, without hesitation, and that alone shows exactly the kind of person you are. I always knew as long as the story was filed early, you’d have your pitches done lightning quick, often before I even got in house. You are so incredibly talented, kind and hard working, and although I know how late you stay up sometimes for us, you bring nothing but light to our little bay window. You’re my right hand man, I don’t know what I would have done without you this semester and I’m so grateful you’re going to stay on to keep the Opinion section running smoothly.

Lucia: You’re probably one of the coolest people I’ve ever met. I’ll see you come through the doors in a chic midi skirt outfit, then watch you churn out some insane visual spreads. You’re my favorite person to come bother, and I’ll really miss telling secrets with you. But I’m never going thrifting with you. Ever.

Cole: I remember meeting you and thinking you were shy. I know now, that is not the case. Since apparently you only show your true self to people you’re comfortable around, I have to say, I’m really honored I’m one of those people. I’ll miss your insane graphics and Cole sass-attacks, and GloRilla will always make me think of you. I owe you a drive home.

Cooper: I’m so happy our paths crossed. You’re the definition of chill, and also just a really genuine and nice person. I’m so grateful for the advice you’ve given to me this semester, from the critiques to the praise, I really did take everything to heart. The voice notes of you telling us to get off the wifi are saved and I will play them when I feel sad and want a laugh. #MucusManForever #GoBears.

Stephanie (Chiefanie): You’re the moral compass I didn’t know I needed. I’ve always seen you as a friend rather than my boss, which I love, but you also always kept me motivated to keep finding ways to improve, from which I’ve felt enormous growth. I admire you so much and although it’s corny, I truly can’t wait to see what you do next.

Cassie: Thank you for your dedication and diligence, always striving to make the most out of our graphics. I am so grateful for your hard work and consistency, and for always finding ways to make my headlines sound better. You did a really amazing job this semester, and I’m so glad we met.

Lars: You’re the funniest German I’ve ever met. You’re such an insanely hard working person, and you really kept both me and the entirety of The D.O. running on your endless talent. I’m going to miss you tons.

Fall ‘24 writers: Although I didn’t meet all of you in person, I really treasured all of our relationships. I loved reading all of your thoughts, and found fulfillment in helping you perfect your arguments and use your voice. I hope you will all find writing in your life in one way or another, and keep using the power of the written word to advocate for the things you all so strongly believe in.
