Syracuse linebacker Marlowe Wax will miss “about six weeks” due to an injury, head coach Fran Brown announced in his weekly Monday press conference. Brown declined to reveal the specifics of Wax’s injury. The linebacker went down with an apparent right-leg injury in the third quarter of SU’s season-opener versus Ohio.

With 6:31 to play in the third quarter Saturday, Wax brought a delayed blitz toward Ohio quarterback Parker Navarro. Wax forced the quarterback to throw the ball away at the last minute as he attempted to wrap him up. SU defensive tackle Rashard Perry was also in on the play and landed on Wax’s right leg.

After sustaining the injury, Wax limped to the sideline but couldn’t make it very far. He was helped off the field by defensive back Justin Barron and SU medical staff personnel. From the sidelines, Wax used crutches to make his way into the locker room. Later in the game, Wax returned to the sideline in sweatpants, a white t-shirt and also sported a boot on his right foot.

Postgame, Brown said, “He could be gone for a few weeks.” Brown also noted they would make sure Wax stays around the team if he misses time.

In four seasons at Syracuse, Wax has starred in the middle of the defense, making the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team twice. Before the 2024 season, Wax was named to the Bednarik Award Watchlist, the award given to the top linebacker in the country.

With Wax out, Syracuse will look to redshirt freshman James Heard Jr. and redshirt junior Anwar Sparrow. Heard Jr. recorded an interception against Ohio on a tipped ball in the air, showing promise of a possible replacement.
