Eric Devendorf is departing the Syracuse program to take a special assistant to the head coach position at the University of Detroit Mercy, he announced on Twitter on Thursday.

Devendorf had rejoined the Orange in 2016 as an assistant strength coach. That effectively put an end to his seven-year professional career. He’s played with Boeheim’s Army in The Basketball Tournament, as well, and is one of the tournament’s top-five scorers in its history.

From 2005 to 2009, Devendorf was a double-digit scorer in all four of his seasons playing for Syracuse. He made the Big East All-Rookie team as a freshman and averaged 14.5 points across 116 career games for SU.

Devendorf, a Bay City, Michigan native, will be a special assistant to Detroit’s Mike Davis, who enters his first year at the helm of the Titans after being named to the head coach position on June 13. Davis has also head coached at Indiana, after assisting Bobby Knight, and at Texas Southern.

Detroit Mercy is coming off an 8-24 season. The Titans play in the Horizon League. They open their regular season on Nov. 6 at Western Michigan.
