Antwan Cordy (8) and Juwan Dowels will miss the rest of the season due to injury.

Syracuse safety Antwan Cordy (forearm) and cornerback Juwan Dowels (knee) will both miss the rest of the season due to injuries sustained last week against Louisville, SU Athletics announced Friday night.

Cordy injured his forearm in the second half against Louisville and tweeted Friday night that his surgery went well. Dowels sustained a knee injury in the first quarter and will have surgery within a few weeks, according to the release.

Cordy ranked second on the Orange last season with 68 total tackles and first with 12 tackles for loss. Through two games this year, the junior had eight total tackles and one for a loss. Cordy also had a fumble recovery against the Cardinals in Week 2. He could apply for a medical redshirt and be eligible through the 2018 season.

Dowels, a redshirt sophomore, ranked seventh on SU with 40 total tackles last season and had four this year. After beginning the season as a backup cornerback, Dowels moved into the starting lineup before the Louisville game, jumping ahead of Cordell Hudson.

“We’re taking a lot of hits in the secondary,” Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said after the game against UofL. “Hopefully we’ll have somebody else step up or we’ll have to move somebody else over that’s not playing the position right now.”

The two injuries leave SU’s secondary corps, which allowed 431 passing yards to the Cardinals, depleted. Freshman Carl Jones is listed as the Orange’s third option at corner based on the two-deep depth chart. Hudson and safety Kielan Whitner are the only remaining defensive back starters from the Orange’s lineup against the Cardinals.
