Former Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer will be the defensive coordinator at Maryland, a source confirmed to The Daily Orange on Tuesday afternoon. Sports Illustrated’s Thayer Evans first reported the news. Shafer was fired just over two weeks ago and was replaced by Dino Babers as Syracuse head coach.
New Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin formerly coached under Jim Harbaugh as the defensive coordinator at Michigan. Harbaugh hired Shafer as an associate head coach at Stanford in 2007. Shafer served as the Cardinal’s defensive coordinator while Durkin served as the team’s defensive line coach.
In his three seasons at Syracuse, Shafer compiled a 14-23 record, with the Orange only winning seven of its last 24 games. Before being the head coach at SU, Shafer was the defensive coordinator at Syracuse and served in defensive roles at each of the six schools he coached at prior.
Syracuse is currently scheduled to play Maryland on Sept. 21, 2019.
