The total number of votes cast in this year’s Student Association elections so far on Wednesday continued to be down from last year. But the organization’s Board of Elections and Membership chair said he believes a “significant population” of the student body will have voted before the polls close.

As of 6 p.m. on Wednesday, 21.4 percent of the student body — or about 3,048 people — had voted so far, Dan Hernandez said.

That’s slightly down from this same time last year when 3,489 students had voted, he said.

Here’s how voting this year breaks down:

Freshmen: 640

Sophomores: 806

Juniors: 840

Seniors: 762

Three candidates are running in this year’s presidential election: Ivan Rosales, Duane Ford and Boris Gresely. Simone Goldslager, Nia Boles and Daniela Lopez, respectively, are the candidates’ running mates. It’s the first time students will elect SA’s vice president.

Patrick Douglas is running unopposed for comptroller.

Hernandez said he believes 25 percent of the student body will have voted when polls close late on Thursday. He described this as a good turnout.

Last year, 28.9 percent of the student body voted, which broke the record for turnout since online voting started in 2002.

Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. Students can vote on MySlice after clicking the “Vote Now” link.
