FB : Five players off Syracuse roster going into spring practice

Five players, including former quarterback Jonny Miller, are not with the Syracuse football team as it heads into spring practice.

Miller, running back Mario Tull, punter Shane Raupers, quarterback Corey Edsall and tight end Nick Raven are no longer on the SU roster.

Syracuse begins spring practice this Tuesday in the Carrier Dome. The Orange’s Spring Game takes place on April 21. It is unknown why the five players have left the football program.

Miller, who is from Castle Rock, Colo., was arrested in August, along with his former high school teammate, Bryce Givens, on suspicion of punching and robbing a man in Boulder, Colo. He was suspended from the football team and did not return this past season.

Tull, from Brooklyn, was a linebacker who moved to running back prior to the 2011 season. He recorded seven tackles in 2010, but did not play in any games in 2011.

Raupers began the 2011 season as the Orange’s starting punter, but was eventually replaced by freshman Jonathan Fisher. He originally made the team as a scholarship player in 2009 but left the team in the preseason. He rejoined the team as a walk-on last spring. Raupers punted 21 times for an average of 37.4 yards per punt this year.

Edsall is the son of former Connecticut and current Maryland head coach Randy Edsall.

In addition, the two freshmen who enrolled at Syracuse this spring and will be participate in spring practice, Ashton Broyld and Myles Davis, were given numbers and placed on the roster. Broyld, a quarterback, will wear No. 1, while Davis, a linebacker, will wear No. 26.
