Syracuse men’s, women’s cross country teams win Harry Lang invite

Sophomore Kevin James won the men's title in the teams' first competition of the 2017 season.

The No. 3 Syracuse men’s cross country team and the SU women won team titles at the Harry Lang invite this weekend at Colgate University. Sophomore Kevin James won the men’s title in the teams’ first competition of the 2017 season.

The men’s team had seven of the top-eight finishers. James led the pack with a 6.4-kilometer time of 20:34.4. Redshirt freshmen Dominic Hockenbury (20:35.7), Joe Dragon (20:35.9) and sophomore Simon Smith (20:36.0) rounded out the top four. Andrew Paladino rounded out the top-five SU finishers with a sixth-place finish.

The men totaled 16 total points, ahead of Buffalo (41) and host Colgate (70), while the women were led by the defending race champion Madeleine Davison. She finished second overall this year in 17:06.5 over the 4.8-kilometer course. Redshirt freshman Rachel Bonner (17:31.6), true freshman Olivia Elston (17:56.8) and redshirt freshman Maggie Toczko (17:59.7), finished fourth through sixth. Kelsey Potts (18:12.0) placed eighth.

Next weekend, Syracuse will run at Penn State to race in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational.
